Oriental Museum Part 2

As stated earlier in the blog, there are some technical difficulties with the inet connection here in Chicago, hence why this is a two part post. I had to post the last post because I was beginning to lose connection again. So here's part 2.

These are several funerary masks from throughout the ages in Egyptian history.



Mummified birds.





These are false canopic jars. Canopic jars were meant to hold certain organs of the deceased, but during Roman Period Egypt, the old ways were practiced but not fully believed in. The traditions were kept but modified, so these canopic jars are just for show during this period.

The next two exhibits included stuff on Nubia and looting in Iraq. Iraq has lost several of the world's treasures due to illegal looting, and it's a detriment not just to Iraq but to the world as these treasures could be studied more in depth as more and new discoveries in the Near East are made. Looting is a problem world wide and a detriment to all involved. Illegal looting activities help fund terrorism, the drug trade, and leads to murder of several archaeologists and innocent civilians. In order to help stop looting, do not buy artifacts that you believe are authentic (and if you're not sure, just stay on the safe side and don't purchase it). Encourage governmental leaders to pass legislation for harsher penalties for looting and the illegal antiquities trade, and keep informed about the practices of the local museums and how they get their artifacts and cultural materials.
